Walt Whitman father of free verse poetry

 Walt Whitman was considered the father of free verse.

He was a journalist, essayist, and poet; He was controversial
because of his lifestyle. He was also a humanist.
During the American civil war, he went to Washington D.C to help in
the hospitals with the men wounded.
On this earth from 1819 until 1892: dying at the age of 72. He was born on Long Island, Nassau County, and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, where he also spent most of his career. He quit school at age 11 to work.
His collection of poetry Leaves of Grass was self-published
